A Geographic Information System (GIS) is one of the most effective methods for gathering environmental data and analyzing the environmental characteristics of an area. Mapping Sustainability has advanced capabilities in GIS technology for environmental modeling and decision support for urban and regional planning, land cover classification, and Phase I and II environmental site assessment. We have expertise designing and developing environmental databases for environmental assessment, impact monitoring, and remediation.
Our staff has advanced degrees in Ecology, Economics, Geography, and Business. We have subject matter expertise in the areas of remote sensing, ecology, floodplain delineation, hydrology, wetlands ecology, soil chemistry, and statistics. We have a unique capability of being able to communicate on highly technical and scientific matters to help define the scope of projects and ensure that your analysis needs are met by the underlying GIS database infrastructure.
Mapping Sustainability performs cutting-edge remote sensing work analyzing multi-temporal, high-resolution satellite-image data for environmental characterization and change detection. Our capabilities include digital image processing and classification of Digital Globe’s Quickbird imagery and GeoEye’s IKONOS imagery. We have also developed techniques to derive accurate land cover information from aerial photography for assessing urban forest and impervious surface coverage for stormwater and urban forest management. In addition, we have expertise using NASA’s AVHRR and MODIS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data to characterize precipitation and temperature change for locations on a global scale. In one of our recent projects we are using NDVI time series data to assess how climatic factors contribute to waterborne disease incidence.
