On October 24, 2006, Denise and Jim Castronovo presented Mapping Sustainability’s remote sensing work at the Boston Urban Forest Coalition’s premiere event: Planting Peace: An Evening with 2004 Nobel Peace Laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai. At this event held at Boston’s historic Faneuil Hall, Mayor Menino established Boston’s Urban Tree Canopy Initiative, which has developed into a commitment by the city to plant 100,000 trees in Boston’s neighborhoods by 2020.
During the pre-event reception, Denise and Jim Castronovo had the honor of meeting Dr. Wangari Maathai. Dr. Maathai asked about Mapping Sustainability’s Urban Forest Accounting methodology used to determine that 29% of Boston is covered by tree canopy. She later explained in her keynote address that equitable resource management combined with good governance nurtures peace. Dr. Maathai inspires Mapping Sustainability to carry on building the best tools and methods for sustainable management of resources.
