In collaboration with Sigma Works of Medford, MA, Mapping Sustainability created a comprehensive study of health issues for the MetroWest region of Boston. The study is a follow-up to the MetroWest Health Data Book (2002) publication with updated information from the 2000 Census and more detailed information on environmental concerns that relate to public health. The MetroWest Health Data Book draws attention to the specific health service needs in the MetroWest region and is used for outreach, education, and to support decision-making.
Mapping Sustainability research regional environmental-public health issues, such as air quality, water quality, hazardous sites, and urban sprawl. Mapping Sustainability summarized these findings in the environmental chapter to the latest release of the MetroWest Health Data Book (2005).
Mapping Sustainability created hundreds of GIS maps to be incorporated into an on-line Health Atlas and into the report. The MetroWest Health Atlas summarizes our findings on key demographic and environmental concerns for the region. Maps show where populations with unmet healthcare needs live within the region and illustrate where populations are at risk from environmental contaminants such as air and water pollution.
