Remote Sensing — Urban Tree Canopy Assessment

Clients:

Funding:

  • Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation Urban Community Forestry Program
  • USDA Forest Service, State and Private Forestry, Forest Health Program

For this project the USDA Forest Service took 1-meter resolution, false-color, infrared aerial photos of Boston in 2005 to gather high-resolution leaf-on imagery. Mapping Sustainability classified the imagery into land cover categories of: forest, water, impervious surfaces, grass, and wetland. From the land cover data Mapping Sustainability determined that Boston’s urban tree canopy cover in 2005 was 29%. American Forests’ CityGreen software was used to determine the ecological-economic benefits of Boston’s urban forest for mitigating storm water runoff, air pollution, and global climate change.
